Vlad Olariu starts from the idea of toy, which he reconstructs from ACC, at approximately the same scale. Tippers, trucks, blocks of flats, pallet stackers, tractors, etc are among his subjects.

The artist recreates a miniature world of adults in the candid and idealized form of toys, using the customary building material of which the today world is made. The advantages of this modern building material are its lightness, thermo insulating properties, easiness of use, low cost. It is easy to see what it is so wide spread on construction sites today.

Thus Vlad Olariu’s ”toys” are not at all innocent, but depict a grotesque image of building sites and real estates that tend to overtake the daily routine of contemporary society. In a children’s world, a priori pure, each abnormality is easy to spot. On top of these building sites’ “toys”, there is an igloo and an Eskimo, both made of ACC, expanding the issue to a global level.

The whole body of works can be viewed as an installation, a strange playground, inhabited by grotesque toys, reminding us of the frailty of normality in contemporary society.
