The exhibition “Constant Feeling of Guilt” marks for the first time the collaboration between the artists Mircea Suciu and Gin, painter and photographer. The exhibited photographs are the result of setting up the subjects of Mircea Suciu’s paintings, which in turn have as a starting point photographs from the advertising archives from the ’50s and ‘60s.
Despite the extreme sharpness of the photographs, allowing the viewer to see even the minutest details, the character is a generic one, symbolic for a state of mind, his individuality being of no importance. The action of the “hero” of the images, the washing routine, catches a glimpse of an intimate moment of someone overwhelmed by his own interiority. The neutral clothing and the gray background, with no visual interruption, lead us to the “secret room” from the mind of an alienated individual, tormented by his own demons, stuck in a repetitive gesture of self-purification. The series of works do no narrate a story, but stress the state of anguish.
The experiment of the two artists goes all the way from advertising photography to painting and back to photography, avoiding the reality and making use of it at the same time, decomposing the images and recomposing them to the essence, allowing a total control of the light, colour, composition and atmosphere. The result of this complicated process of creation, the photographs from the exhibition, retains the ambiguity of meaning, giving the viewer several reading options.
