Although painting is the artist’s medium of choice, for this exhibition, Marius Bercea experiments with unusual media such as drawing with plaster or pyrography on carving.
Bercea’s art is based generally on memory and the theme of this exhibition is no exception. The drawing with plaster depicts a vague, diluted landscape, where one can see the geometrical structure of some stairs crossing it. The gray tones sprayed on the white-yellowish substance of the plaster give the image the air of a relic.
The pyrography on carving assembled on the opposite wall shows a group of characters posing in front of a monument – a pretext for a family album picture. The two images are contrasting; the drawing has modulated tones of gray and white, while the pyropraghy has effects of light and dark. There are two images that correspond to day and night memory respectively, apparently far apart but completing each other through juxtaposition.
The working materials are not randomly chosen, both the wood of the carving and the plaster are materials that change under the passing of time, confining its memory and having the power to evoke the viewer personal memories.
