Avoiding his main studio practice and following a side track, Tom Chamberlain proposes the exhibition “Clockwise From the Left”, an assembly of mono prints and one watercolour meticulously rendered.
The interest of the British artist is concentrated exclusively on the abstract art, continuing in an original and innovative way the tradition of abstract painting in the last half of the century. What is a constant in Chamberlain’s painting is the slowly revealing of the image, the game the artist plays with the visual perception of the viewer. One cannot focus on the image but zooms continuously the virtual space created by the artist.
The works from the exhibition, although technically speaking they are not the object of the daily practice in the studio, function similarly to a hint or a pause. The juxtaposition of the watercolour and the mono prints generates a dialogue between two mechanical processes, one of the press and one of the artist. The method of creating images specific to Tom Chamberlain is one of slowly accumulating layers of colour (or ink in the present case) by repeatedly overlaying them thus generating a feeling of void, of blankness.
Visually, it is the imminence of something not yet here—or already gone. The works shown in the exhibition are an attempt to establish the extent and focal point of the image.
